FN3505-354 - Apple
This new apple variety, resulting from a GoldRush x Pristine cross, offers commercial potential due to its excellent flavor and long storage life, proven through extensive evaluation.
A seedling designated as FN 3505-354 is the 354th seeding from the Fruiting Nursery of progeny 3505 = GoldRush x Pristine, a cross made by Jules Janick in 1996. Seedlings derived from this cross were planted in the Old Horticulture Farm of Purdue University in 1997 in a closely spaced planting called the Fruiting Nursery. The 354th tree first fruited in 2002, picked on August 27, 2002, described as a yellow apple with a blush, three inches in diameter, and subsequently, evaluated in storage on October 30, 2002 and February 18, 2003. On February 18, 2003, after more than five months of refrigerated storage, our notes indicate, "crisp flesh and very good flavor." The apple was propagated by grafting on MM111 rootstock and planted at Meigs Farm on March 21, 2005. It was evaluated again in August 19, 2004, and described as pale yellow with red blush, slightly acid, crisp, and excellent flavor. It was evaluated again on September 10, 2008 and September 4, 2009.
