Batch Counterflow/Osmotically Assisted Reverse Osmosis using Pressure Exchanger and Atmospheric Pressure Tank

A technology utilizing a pressure exchanger simplifies reverse osmosis water treatment systems, reducing components and space while enabling up to 100,000 gallons per day of processing with lower energy consumption and reduced downtime.
Technology No. 2022-WARS-69584

Researchers at Purdue University have developed a technology to improve the reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment system. By including a pressure exchanger instead of high-pressure tanks, one can use the same membrane module instead of multiple. This reduces the number of component and space required. This discovery allows off the shelf components to be used as well as flexibility in size of the system based on the needs of the user. With this system, one unit could process up to 100,000 gallons per day.

Advantages:

- Reduced system down time

- Lower required tank volumes

- Reduced specific energy consumption

Applications:

- Reverse Osmosis water treatment

- Energy efficient water treatment

Technology Validation:

This technology was validated with a lab-scale prototype.
