Technology No. 2016-KIM-67286

The challenge of balancing available seating for guests and using space in the environment is one that has plagued home, apartment, and condominium owners for years. While many hosts want plenty of seating for an arbitrary event with the potential for many guests, there is the issue of where to store the extra furniture after the event. Given the extra furniture would most likely not be used in the primary living space after the event, it has to be stored. It is costly for most to spend money on new furniture that is used sparingly and takes up valuable storage space.

Researchers at Purdue University have developed a new style of furniture that solves both the waste in money and space by consumers. The "Sharing Chair" is a bar stool style chair that can be used by one to three individuals. The chair is a stackable, interlocking system that allows it to be configured as a single chair when fully stacked, or as two or three separate chairs. This chair helps homeowners maximize potential seating while minimizing storage space, saving the homeowner money.

Advantages:

-Interlocking system allows for easy stacking

-Allows seating for many, but not at a large cost of space

Potential Applications:

-Seating in kitchen areas in homes

-Events with many guests

-Restaurants
